Things to Know Before You Go

As of October 2026, Tanzania requires a tourist visa for entry, available online or upon arrival. Health precautions are necessary due to endemic diseases; vaccinations are critical.

Visa and Entry Requirements

  • Visa: Required for most travelers; apply online or on arrival.
  • Passport: Must be valid for at least six months beyond entry.
  • Proof of Onward Travel: Return ticket required.

Health and Vaccination Requirements

Vaccinations are essential for travel, including:

  • Yellow Fever: Required if traveling from an endemic area.
  • Malaria: Prophylaxis recommended in certain regions.
  • Routine Vaccines: Stay current on general vaccines.

Safety and Other Travel Rules

  • U.S. State Dept Advisory: Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution (lowered from Level 3 on Oct 16, 2026). The Mtwara Region along the Mozambique border is still Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) due to terrorism, and our trips don’t go there. Read the full advisory.
  • Crime, including robbery and pickpocketing, does happen in Dar es Salaam, Arusha and busy tourist areas. Keep valuables out of sight and use the drivers and guides we arrange.
  • Zanzibar insurance: Zanzibar requires its own travel insurance for every visitor (about $44 per adult and $22 per child), even if you already have coverage. Buy it online before you fly; we’ll walk you through it.
  • Medical care is limited outside Dar es Salaam and Arusha, so we recommend travel insurance that covers medical evacuation.
  • Roads can be poor; public transport varies widely in quality.
  • Currency/Tech: Tanzanian Shilling (TZS); many places accept USD.
